Dioecious or monoecious, annual or perennial herbs, not climbing, bearing stinging hairs, these less than 5 mm long. Stipules fused, intrapetiolar. Cystoliths present. Leaves alternate, simple, serrate. Inflorescences usually unisexual panicles, sometimes appearing spicate or as interrupted spikes.
