Usually climbing or trailing herbs with ± succulent stems and leaves. Stipules present. Leaves alternate, peltate. Flowers solitary on long axillary peduncles, strongly zygomorphic, showy, usually (in ours) red, orange or yellow. Sepals 5, one produced into a long slender nectar-spur.
