Relatively small, slender, annual or perennial glabrous herbs.   Leaves entire, sessile or shortly petiolate, alternate or opposite. Flowers 5(-6)-merous, solitary in leaf axils or in terminal racemes. Calyx divided almost base; margins usually hyaline.
