Plants annual or perennial; synoecious sometimes andromonoecious; sometimes rhizomatous, often cespitose, sometimes mat-forming, rarely stoloniferous. Culms 2–300 cm, erect, geniculate or decumbent, usually herbaceous, sometimes becoming woody.
