Annual or perennial herbs. Roots fibrous. Leaves grass-like or cylindric, sheathing at the base. Inflorescence terminal, umbellate or paniculate, the flowers solitary or in capitula; bracts leaf-like, scarious or membranous; bracteoles sometimes present. Flowers bisexual.
