Centaury is named after the Greek centaur Chiron, who was known for his skills in medicinal herbs. Like all centaurs, he was half horse, half man. And indeed, these plants were used as a remedy for stomach and liver troubles. The Dutch name 'thousand guilder herb' shows just how valuable this plant meant in olden days.
