Usually shrubs, less often small trees. Leaves petiolate, sometimes with domatia, without bacterial nodules. Inflorescences axillary and opposite, sessile to subsessile, usually many-flowered and strongly contracted. Flowers (4-)5-9(-12)-merous, usually sweetly scented, sessile, bisexual.
