Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves flat and linear, never filiform except in F. squarrosa, usually without hairs at the throat of the leaf sheath. Inflorescence an anthela. Glumes spirally arranged; the lowest two glumes may be empty, the succeeding ones bisexual, the uppermost male or sterile. Perianth 0.
