Herbs, subshrubs or shrubs, sometimes succulent or climbing. Leaves alternate, sometimes radical, entire or lobed. Capitula either (1) heterogamous with marginal fertile (rarely sterile) female florets and bisexual disk florets or (2) homogamous. Calyculus of usually much shorter basal bracts present.
